Screening Mammography in the US
From 1987 to 2015, the percentage of women over the age of 40 years who have had a screening mammogram has increased from 29% to 64%. We consider this a huge victory for breast cancer awareness. However, the fight is far from over.
While this trend is encouraging, a substantial number of women are still not being screened annually. Without proper screening, many of these women may not learn of their diagnosis until far later. That is why the American College of Radiology recommends a screening mammogram at least once per year.
But many women don’t manage to get these exams. The reasons could be:
- Lack of access to 3D-screening mammography
- Confusing and conflicting professional guidelines
- The fear of overdiagnosis and false positives
- Cost of time and funds

Knowing Is Half the Battle
Patient education on the benefits of screening mammography is essential. Plenty of conflicting information is available through the web. So providing clear standards and info will only serve to benefit patients.
It was found that having at least one mammography facility was found to be associated with a greater frequency of mammography use in both urban and rural women. Adding more mammography facilities had decreasing marginal effects. In general, long driving times were associated with lower use of mammography.
Survival and Screening Go Hand-in-Hand
The lower breast cancer survival rate among rural women has also been attributed to differences in screening access and compliance. Going without screening puts patients at risk of developing breast cancer without a timely diagnosis.
A systematic search of 28 studies found that the rural population was less likely to have mammographic breast screenings. And this difference was consistent in various rural areas within and outside the USA. The study concluded lower compliance amongst rural women. This was due to a lack of access to 2D/3D screening mammography services. With our telemammography service, patients can eliminate much of the geographic restraints they face.
Spatial accessibility may also be a factor in urban areas. This is especially true for minorities and low-income residents, who are more likely to depend on public transportation.
Don’t Let Distance Prevent Key Screening
A study conducted in Atlanta reported that the mean transportation time to the nearest facility was 51 minutes. Time to the nearest facility would not generally pose a barrier for women with access to a private vehicle. Solving the spatial inaccessibility is an opportunity for an intervention that operates at the population level. Whether in a rural or urban setting offering in-office mammography is a concept that is gaining some traction.

Making Screening Stress-Free for the Patient
We understand that patients look for:
- A rapid report turnaround time
- Pleasant, warm, and calming professionals to work with
- And a screening mammography suite
Interpretation by experienced breast imagers with optimal performance benchmarks is a strong marketing tool. This alone can succeed in convincing patients to use the in-office services. Such an offering is justifiable for practices with an expected volume of mammography utilization that would be economically feasible and may also serve as a source of non-practice income. Screening mammography being a preventative test is an exception for self-referral that is generally prohibited.
